Last weekend was Big Bad Con, one of the Bay Area RPG conventions that I like to hit. It's my favourite out of the whole lot; it tends to be where indy RPG designers show up and run their games and there's just this air of experimentation that's really heady. I was in several games that were just fantastic.

There was a Monsterhearts game which rocked my world. It had total buy-in from all the players; the GM was very good at both the game and also making sure that everybody had a voice in the game; and the game ended with a lot of very interesting changes to the characters (nearly everyone would have changed skins between the end of this adventure and the beginning of the next if there was going to be a follow-up game).

Then there was an amazing game of A Penny For My Thoughts called Into the Woods, which 'skinned' Penny into a game about fairy-tales. Once again, everyone in that game totally bought into the concept, everyone had a voice (though with Penny, it's hard not to!) and while some people couldn't finish the story, everyone was able to conclude theirs in a satisfying way.

Lastly, I was in a game of Ribbon Drive. It was quite possibly the most emotional game of which I've ever been a part. Everyone was completely invested in the road-trip. Our characters were wonderful, flawed, broken people and we told a story that was a roller-coaster of intense emotions, sharp pains and poignant catharsis. It's very hard for me to express how good the game was, both due to the person who ran it and the people who played in it. I will never forget it.

The con did me a lot of good. I feel much more in tune with my life right now. I've had a chance to reconnect with my tribe. That's always a good thing.
