I had a wonderfully lovely time at the Pacificon RPG convention over the weekend. I didn't play in as many games as I usually would, but the two that I got into were top notch. Both were Superheroic in nature: the first was a Mutants and Masterminds game that absolutely rocked. The other was a game I'd wanted to play for a while: Better Angels. It's a new Greg Stolze game (which means that a) it uses the One Roll System and b) it's awesome) about playing supervillains in a world where the clash between villains and heroes is actually a clash between the humans possessed by demons and angels. The reason that most supervillains in this world engage in cartoonish acts of eeeeeevil is due to the fact that the demons who possess them (and thus give them their powers) really want to be entertained... and if you can keep that demon entertained by the spectacle of you holding the Hoover Dam hostage while ranting and making boisterous speeches, he might forget to try to tempt you into killing people or ruining people's lives.

Best of all, unlike last year no one was a misogynistic jackass at any of the games I was in! It's sad when I have to count that as a plus...
This weekend I was able to attend my second ConQuest SAC gaming convention, which I hope will continue to be a yearly thing for me.

We played four games total: One of Fantasy HERO (Tuala Morn); one of Numenera (which I've wanted to play ever since getting the book, so yay!); one kid friendly HERO Champions game (the kids had a great time and the adults did too); and one narrative game that we playtested called In The Hands Of An Angry God (looks really promising... it's a game of factions in the early days of settlement of a breakaway Utopian colony). Without exception all four were wonderful and let me soak in the joy that tabletop RPGs bring to me.

Perhaps best of all, there was no That Guy at the con. That Guy is the person who is loud, constantly in your face, works to ruin the game and generally seems like poison to any game he joins. There's always one or two somewhere at a convention, but he was well hidden during this one! Keep hiding, That Guy!

In passing, I discovered the new RPG Hillfolk and I'm intrigued by it. While it started off life as a 'game of iron-age drama' while being Kickstartered, as the Kickstarter rolled on people started to realise that they could model so many other settings in the system... and now the game's become something of a pan-genre RPG focused on character interaction. Very curious! One day I'll pick it up and see what it's like.

One thing that I love about RPG cons is that you are often gaming with really interesting people. At one point, our Fantasy HERO game paused so we could have a round-table discussion of Objectivism. You really don't have fun things like that happen elsewhere.

And between/after events, we caught a couple of Rifftrax (Treasure of the Amazon and Cyborg Cop 2, both excriable) and played a bit of Suburbia, a fun city-building board game. Truly, it was a weekend of hedonism!

So the con was lots of fun and very restful. Sadly, it was also wall-to-wall social interaction, so my ability to do Social is at an extremely low ebb. Unfortunately, Monday was a meeting-rich environment, so that's carried on to today. And I have meetings tomorrow on my nominal work from home day... aie.
