Over the weekend, I finally finished Final Fantasy VI, which I've been trying to finish since... yeesh, 1999. Has it really been that long?

I first picked it up in 1999 when the game was released for the Playstation in the Final Fantasy Anthology, which contained FF V, FF VI and a soundtrack (why don't games do this more often???). I played through Final Fantasy V while I was getting my IT diploma and then I moved off to New Hampshire. I started to play FFVI while there and even reached the halfway point, but I lost track of my save game which made me irritable and grumpy and not inclined to pick the game up for a while.

A couple years ago, I finally decided I wanted to get back to FF VI because I remembered just how much I enjoyed the plot during my playthrough. So I broke out my Caanoo (an open-source handheld that's awesome at running emulators) and started playing through the game in its original SNES incarnation. I didn't quite get to the halfway point this time. But last year I picked up an NVIDIA Shield and retired my Caanoo, since the Shield had much more power and could connect to an HDTV. I tried unsuccessfully to transfer the save file to the Shield's emulator. Well that was a bummer!

So this year I thought 'hey, I really would like to finish FF6 because I've been trying to play this game forever and I really loved what I saw of the plotline and now I can play it on a TV or on a portable game system so why not?'. I went out and got a copy of Final Fantasy VI Advance (its price had not yet approached the levels of ridiculousness that it has now), got a ROM image of it, applied the Colour Restoration Hack and the Sound Restoration Hack to it and started playing it on the Shield.

And I finished it!

Finally!

The game was as good as I remembered it (plotwise... the mechanics could have stood a little work) and I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. That also lets me strike off one more Final Fantasy from my list. And I finally finished a game that I've wanted to play for fifteen years!

The only other game that I've had this much trouble finishing was Crono Trigger which I started off on emulator no fewer than eight times. I finally finished it on the Playstation when the game came out in the Final Fantasy Chronicles collection.

Now I need to figure out what my next game is going to be...
